Bombay Bicycle Club: New Single & Video
If anyone remembers, so perfect was Bombay Bicycle Club’s latest album that Music Gob rated it as the best full length release in 2011. Well now the hypnotic opener ‘How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep’ has been released as a single and also an rather lovely animated video and we rejoiced muchly.

Review: Jonathan Sebastian Knight
The internet is awash with opinion and conjecture. When a lonesome blogger sets fingers to keyboard to express feelings about a struggling artist it is all but lost in a sea of white noise; which is a shame really when you stumble across an artist like Jonathan Sebastian Knight. An unspecified amount of time ago, I heard a small Scottish band with a big name called My Cousin I Bid You Farewell....

Song of the Week: 'I Suppose' by Bellman

I’m a fickle man. I had Tuesday’s Song of the Week all ready to go this morning but in an act of craziness...

Toy (the band)
Don’t ask me how I first heard these guys. It certainly wasn’t through Google. Calling yourself ‘Toy’ isn’t that great from SEO. You may aswell call yourself ‘Girls’ or ‘A’ or ‘!!!’.
Anyway, Toy’s music is rather good ’80s goth-tinged pop. These two songs form part of a double single EP thingy (I say thingy as...

2011 and All That
Sick and tired of “best of” lists? Me too. Here’s another. Normally I do a Top Ten list for the Music Liberation site each year (here’s is 2010’s list and 2009’s list) but as we’re doing something different on Muisic Liberation this year, it means my personal “Best of 2011” list can go here. At least this anual review is at the end of the...

Song of the Week: 'Just Breathe' by Pearl Jam
Since watching Pearl Jam Twenty (PJ20) a few weeks ago, I’ve remembered how much I loved this band. I fell out of love with them a long while back, just after they released their sketchy and disjointed third album Vitalogy. My tastes were changing, music was changing and so were the band. Nonetheless they persevered through this time and managed to traverse the hazardous transition from...

This is England - This is Christmas
The ‘This is England’ franchise is quite possibly the best British drama to ever grace both television and cinema. Its unflinching analysis of human emotion and human tragedy is nothing short of genius. Sometimes the most beautiful and poignant art is created not by one or two people but by a collective that is greater than its individual parts. Shane Meadows may well be the captain...

Song of the Week: 'Synrise' by Goose
This song - Synrise - is the opening and title track from their new(ish) album. Goose don’t seemingly get the same attention as say Justice, Simian Mobile Disco or even The Bloody Beetroots but they’re equally as compelling.
Also what a fucking ace video.

Song of the Week: 'Toby's Hill' by Pengilly's
Absolutely superb.
Darkside EP by Darkside
Well this is all shades of great.
Groovy minimal techno. Or quirky ambient beats. Or rhythmic soundscapes. Take your pick or make up your own.

Shit Trends in Music #2 - Watery Eyed Indie Chicks
Following on from Shit Trends in Music #1 some time ago, the inevitably and unimaginatively named Shit Trends in Music #2 is here to rage about the insidious and frankly disturbing proliferation of what I’ve come to call ‘Slowed Down Acoustic Covers of Otherwise Popular Songs Sung By Watrery-Eyed Indie Chicks’ (or SDACOOPSSBWEIC for a short and easy to remember acronym). Astute...

Song of the Week: 'Underneath the Stars' by The...
A great song and great little video and sound quality from their 2009 tour at the 02 (really it should be called ‘The Dome’, we paid three quarters of a billion for it thankyouverymuch).
One of The Cure’s very best songs. In the frequent moments when The Cure are good, they’re possibly the best band in the world.

New Pulled Apart by Horses Song
Ahh, remember all the way back to 2010? Remember the World’s tallest building was officially finished in Dubai? Remember the Winter Olympics were held in Whistler? Remember how we all danced and threw odd shapes like our balls were on fire to the dulcet tones of Pulled Apart By Horses and their fucking fantastic eponymous début album?
WELL NOW YOU CAN RELIVE THOSE HEADY DAYS OF LAST YEAR...

The Evolution of Dance Music: Interactive Map
Forget that this fantastic interactive map showing how dance music spread and evolved across the globe was done by Thomson Travel Agents on their corporate blog, and instead sit back and marvel at it.
If you skip to the original article, there are a few gripes about dates, genres and missing influences, but overall it’s a superb and complete piece of work. It also makes the mind boggle...

Song of the Week: 'Old' by Machine Head
The first real enthusiasm I had for music was with metal. The early 90s was a glorious time for the genre: Metallica were still just about at the top of their game, Iron Maiden had released Fear of the Dark, Sepultura had just released their iconic Chaos A.D album and new metal bands such as Fear Factory and Machine Head were producing fantastic cutting edge metal. This single, from Machine...

Boybands: Not Completely Hideous
In general, boybands are awful bloody things. Each one a heady cocktail of dubious sexuality, hair products, a feverish desire for fame, terrible clothing and a distinct lack of integrity. They’re a tragic institution and purveyors of the finest musical crap since Pete Waterman stopped producing records in his “hit factory” and started watching trains or whatever. As someone...

Song of the Week: 'Runners Up' by Kurt Vile
Somewhat shamefully I only discovered Kurt Vile recently. I saw his picture on the front of a guitar magazine and it said something about slurry, melodic stoner rock or whatever. I made a mental note to look him up when I got home. It turns out he’s only ludicrously great.
It’s funny, sometimes serendipitous moments like that can make you like the artist more, as if they’re...

Exclusive Listen of New Kate Bush Song
Here at Music Gob Towers (“towers” apparently being the in thing to write when referring to a mythical Head Quarters) Kate Bush is a little bit worshipped. The crackers old bird is a bloody genius I tells you.
Her fantastic album Deeper Understanding was released earlier this year, reworking some of her previous hits and was truly fantastic. One of 2011’s highlights thus far....

Song of the Week: 'Echo Beach' by Martha and the...
Only one of the great songs of our time. It’s funny, sometimes a band can write such an iconic song that it destroys them. They’re overshadowed by something they created and Echo Beach is one of those creations. I never tire of it in it’s simplicity and it’s one of the greatest guitar lines ever written. Oh yes.
